Puerto Maldonado Rainforest jungle

Puerto Maldonado – The Biodiversity Capital of the World

As one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth. Its National parks and wildlife reserves host over 1000 species of butterflies, 200 species of mammals, around 800 species of birds, and hundreds of species of trees and plants.

Puerto Maldonado is a Southeastern Peruvian city located in the Amazon Rainforest on the confluence of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios Rivers, which serves as a tributary of the Amazon River. Puerto Maldonado is an incredible gateway to some of Peru’s most famous and magnificent National parks and Wildlife Reserves.

Puerto Maldonado is located nearby some of the World’s most pristine primary rainforests including Manu National Park, Tambopata National Reserve, and Bahuaja – Sonene National Park. These unique destinations contain 800 species of birds, 200 species of mammals, the largest number of species of butterflies on Earth as well as remarkable sites like oxbow lakes and clay licks, where hundreds of birds including macaws feed on clay.

There are a number of Puerto Maldonado jungle lodges that provide accommodation, meals and adventures into the surrounding jungle. Exciting excursions around the area include boat trips to the incredible Sandoval Lake, visits to local communities and hikes to the Monkey Island where loud red howler monkeys live side by side with large anacondas and drowsy turtles. Spend your day walking above the treetops, zip-lining through the jungle, fishing for piranhas or by simply admiring the countless species of plants and trees you won’t see anywhere else on Earth. In the evening search for caimans on the river’s edge or embark on a night walk through the jungle to see the nature which thrives when the sun goes down.
