Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Lima

Arrive in Peru’s sprawling capital city and receive a welcome at Lima airport, a Peru Machu Picchu tours representative will meet you there and accompany you by private vehicle to your hotel, showing you the city as you go.

Lima is home to the Government palace and World-renowned & award-winning restaurants.

Day 2: Lima City Tour (UNESCO World Heritage)

Discover Lima’s fascinating history on a guided city tour. Your adventure begins with sightseeing around the historical city center (UNESCO World Heritage), colonial churches, palaces and promenades. The day ends with a visit to Larco Herrera Museum, one of South America’s best museums.

Enjoy the rest of the day at your own leisure.

* Visit the vibrant suburb of Miraflores or the bohemian district of Barranco, and sample some local culinary delights or a glass of Peru’s national drink ‘Pisco sour’ at one of the many cafes, bars and restaurants in the neighborhood. Suggested restaurants!

Day 3: Flight to Cusco & Transfer to the Sacred Valley (Via Pisaq town)

Upon your arrival at Cusco airport, you will be met by our staff and transferred to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Along the route, stop at a Llamafarm and admire the South American camelids such as Llamas, Alpacas, Vicuñas and Huanacos, visit the picturesque town of Pisaq, including the Inca archaeological site, appreciate the fine masonry, residential quarters, Peru’s largest Inca cemetery and the magnificent Inca terraces, Visit The vibrant Artisan market, a great opportunity to interact with the locals, some dressed in their traditional colorful costumes. Try the best “EMPANADAS” in the area. Stop along the way to take pictures of the impressive Andes mountain range and its snow-capped mountains.

* A few thousand feet lower in elevation 2850 m / 9405 ft than Cusco city makes it an ideal place to enjoy your first days here as you adjust with the high altitude.

Day 4: Moray to Maras 'Salt Mines' hike & Sky Lodge Adventure

Start the day by visiting Moray, the “Inca agricultural greenhouse” that was an Inca experimental place to study the adaptation of plants into new ecosystems. Enjoy an easy and pleasant 3.5-hour hike down into the Salt mines of Maras an ancient Pre-Inca site of evaporation ponds used to mine pink salt. This off the beaten hike gives you a different perspective of the Sacred Valley, surrounded by corn, Quinua, barley fields and the amazing Andes mountain range.

After, transfer to Pachar village, the starting point of the Sky Lodge adventure (advance booking required), rock climb 1000 ft up to your room fixed to the side of the mountain above the Sacred Valley. The day ends with a nice dinner and an overnight in a glass capsule overlooking the mystical Sacred Valley of the Inca.

Day 5: Zip line adventure - Tour of Ollantaytambo 'Inca Fortress' & Traditional Pachamanca lunch

Enjoy the amazing views of the Urubamba Mountain range as having a hearty breakfast in your glass capsule, then start a 2-hour zipline journey down to Pachar village. Next, transfer to Ollantaytambo town, explore the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo that once was part of the Royal Estate of the Inca Emperor Pachacuti, admire the sophisticated Inca architecture and town planning, temples, astronomical centers, fountains. After, experience a traditional Pachamanca lunch, an ancient cooking technique where ingredients are cooked underground using preheated stones and banana leaves.

Day 6: Short Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu

Morning transfer to Ollantaytambo train station to board the train to Km 104, the starting point for your 2-day Inca trail to Machu Picchu. During the 1.5-hour journey, a light snack is provided. Once off the train, you’ll begin your hike up the gradual slope to the Inca ruins of Wiñaywayna. Then continue on to join the last section of the famous 4-day Inca trail. This path winds its way to the Inti Punku (Sun Gate) from where you will have the first glimpse of Machu Picchu before heading down to the Inca site.

Day 7: Explore Machu Picchu "The lost City of the Incas" – Ride back to Cusco City

After breakfast, You will be transferred to the Machu Picchu archaeological site by a shuttle bus.

Here you’ll tour Machu Picchu Sanctuary for 2 hours (approx). Explore the enigmatic complex accompanied by your tour guide, who leads the way through the site, providing varied information on key areas of interest. For those seeking a challenge, we suggest hiking Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain commonly known as “Montaña” (advance reservation required) from where you can appreciate the immensity of Machu Picchu.

After lunch, board the train back to either Ollantaytambo or Poroy town.

Day 8: Cusco City Tour (UNESCO World Heritage City)

Enjoy a morning tour of the ancient capital of the Inca Empire “Cusco city” – UNESCO World Heritage City, it takes you to Pre-hispanic Inca temples, impressive Inca complexes on the outskirts of the city such as Saqsayhuaman, an Inca complex with megalithic constructions; Q’enqo, an ancient Inca ceremonial site; the Cathedral which is one of South America’s nicest Catholic churches, the famous San Pedro Market, a local farmers market where you can see fresh local produce and delicacies. You’ll discover historic plazas, quaint local coffee shops, unique workshops and the true magic of this historical city.

Afternoon at your own leisure.

* What to do and see in your spare time: Admire the marvelous city’s Inca-Colonial architecture, visit the Inca Museum which houses magnificent ancient artifacts and colonial art, visit a silver workshop, learn all about the process and designs of the high-quality Peruvian jewelry or enjoy learning how to cook the most popular Peruvian dishes at a cooking class, if feeling adventurous! Try Cusco’s most traditional dish “CUY” (Baked Guinea pig) or Alpaca skewers quite popular at present.

Day 9: Rainbow Mountain Hike

Early start! A 3-hour bus ride to Vinincunca village, the starting point of today’s hike, on the way, you can appreciate the Andes mountains as you pass by picturesque villages and unique landscapes. Then 1.5-hour hike up the gradual slope to the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, enjoy incredible views of snowcapped mountains, Cusco‘s highest peak ‘Ausangate’ 6384 meters / 21 067 ft and the amazing geography surrounding this famous Rainbow Mountain, watch alpacas and llamas along the trail as you walk to this Sacred mountain.

* The high altitude shouldn’d be a problem today after adjusting with it in the Sacred Valley and Cusco city.

Day 10: Flight to Puerto Maldonado & Transfer to Rainforest Lodge

Transfer to Cusco Airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado city (45 min approx).

Receive a welcome at Puerto Maldonado Airport and take a transfer to the lodge.

Upon arrival, the lodge staff will take us to their office in town where you’ll leave most of your luggage in a safe storage room and continue traveling with a small pack with just the necessary items for your next two nights in the jungle. Then take a motorized canoe up river to our jungle lodge in the Madre de Dios area. The lodge is eco-friendly with comfortable rooms, flush toilets (en suite), showers (cold water only), mosquito nets and lamps. Adventure into the jungle with our local, multilingual guides and encounter magnificent fauna and flora in their natural habitat. Spot everything from macaws and monkeys to peccary, jabirus, otters and butterflies.

Day 11: Rainforest Activities

CHILDREN | The Children’s Rainforest Trail: Ania & the World’s Voice — A short trail designed for children with the help of ANIA, an environmental education NGO. Children ages 6-12 hike with a female tour guide through a challenging short trail where they follow maps, solve riddles and find clues that will lead them to Ania’s ‘gifts’. The trail teaches children how people live in the rainforest and leave a valuable message from Ania, “a girl born in the depths of the rainforest to fill our hearts with hope.” The concept, the story and the trail are trademarked by ANIA, a non-profit organization with the mission of creating 100,000 hectares of “Tierras de los Niños’ (Children’s Lands) – private protected areas in the management of children.

ADULTS | Visit the Parrot Clay Lick – A 15-minute boat ride and an hour walk from the lodge is a clay lick used both by parrots and parakeets. From the boat you will see them descend on most clear days to ingest the clay on a bank.

CHILDREN | Rainforest Tattoo – At the lodge we will prepare a paste from the fruit of huito and achiote (native seeds) to draw dark blue and red tattoos on ourselves. They last several days.

ADULTS | Ethnobotanical Tour – Along this trail we will encounter local flora and fauna used by the native population.

Day 12: Boat ride back to Puerto Maldonado & Flight to Lima

After exploring the wilds, it’s time to jump back into the canoe and return to Puerto Maldonado city.

Transfer to Puerto Maldonado Airport for your flight to Lima (1.5 hours approx).
